Trichloroethylene (Trike)

Vapour degreasing of metal components has been an industrial process since the 1930s and the most popular solvent has been Trichloroethylene. The solvent is non-flammable and can be used in vapour, vapour-liquid and ultrasonic tanks.

Benefits

  • high solvent power – has a high solvency for oils, greases, waxes, tars, lubricants and coolants. It is effective and economical in usage.
  • no conversion costs – most industrial degreasing equipment was originally designed for use with Trichloroethylene

Disadvantages

  • greater restriction on its use in the UK than other degreasers
  • expensive to purchase

Properties

  • trichloroethylene >90%
  • flashpoint not applicable
  • boiling point 87.2ºC
  • specific gravity 1.46g/cm3 at 20ºC
